Q: What is GEO, and will it replace SEO?

A: With the quick adoption of zero-click answer environments like Chat GPT and Google AI Overview, a new concept is making the rounds called Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). GEO isn't replacing SEO, but it is a supplemental factor that should be considered as the fundamental concept of search as we know it is shifting.

Things you can do now for implementing GEO practices:

  • Consider adding clear, concise, long-tail question/answer-style content throughout your website. Think FAQ-style content that is conversational in tone.
  • Use structured data (also referred to as Schema) to allow AI to understand your content more accurately.
  • Shift your focus from website traffic to establishing yourself as an authority or industry leader on specific topics.
  • As you did with SEO, continue to create relevant and valuable content for your visitors. Many concepts of GEO and SEO overlap, with great content being the primary one.
  • Add an llms.txt file to your root directory alongside your robots.txt file to help AI crawlers browse websites more effectively.

The concept of Generative Engine Optimization is still new. Many professionals in the industry don’t fully understand the nuance…shoot, the entire concept is barely a year old. At SDH, we will be keeping an eye on this space for our clients to ensure we are ahead of the curve.
