What does Social Design House specialize in for arts and culture organizations?

We help museums, performing arts groups, cultural nonprofits, and heritage-focused organizations strengthen their brand, digital presence, and communications. Our work spans brand strategy, visual identity, website design and development, and digital marketing.

The organizations we work with

Museums, including art, history, science, and children's museums, each with different collection, exhibition, and education needs. Performing arts organizations: theaters, orchestras, dance companies, and opera, where season structure and subscription models shape everything. Cultural nonprofits and festivals with programming that spikes around events. Heritage organizations and historic sites, where preservation and interpretation carry the story. Arts education organizations serving students, families, and schools.

What makes this sector distinct

Three things separate arts and culture work from general nonprofit work.

The content is genuinely complex. Exhibitions, performances, collections, artists, and programs relate to each other in ways that require real modeling. Get the structure wrong and staff spend years maintaining duplicate information by hand.

Accessibility is central rather than peripheral. Cultural institutions have a mission-level commitment to public access, and municipally operated ones carry direct obligations under ADA Title II. See our answer on accessibility requirements.

Ticketing and membership drive the technology. Most institutions run a platform such as Tessitura or Spektrix that holds audience, membership, and often donor data. The website works with that rather than around it.

What we typically do

Brand strategy and identity, usually evolution of an existing institutional brand rather than replacement, plus the system to apply it across exhibitions, programs, wayfinding, and digital.

Website design and development with content models built for exhibitions, performances, collections, and calendars, integrated with ticketing and built to accessibility standards.

Digital marketing spanning audience development, membership growth, and donor communication, including the connective work of making ticketing data and donor data inform each other.

The tension we help organizations navigate

Cultural institutions serve two goals that occasionally pull apart: reaching new and broader audiences, and serving existing members and subscribers who fund the work.

Design decisions frequently sit at that fault line. A homepage optimized for a first-time visitor is not the one optimized for a subscriber renewing a season package. We help make that tradeoff deliberately rather than by default, usually with clear paths for both rather than a compromise that serves neither.

Where we are based

We work from Charlotte, North Carolina, with cultural organizations across the Carolinas and beyond. Regional institutions face a specific challenge, competing for attention and philanthropic support against larger organizations in bigger markets, and positioning matters more as a result.
